Sunwhado is the picture that anyone can experience the purity of essence transferring in direct, through the act of drawing face be recognized simply beyond the meaning of text itself.
This is transferring Seon(good) of the purity intactly before learning of realizing Do(Cultivating oneself morally or religiously) of Dogodobisangdo < If Do is called genuine Do itself, it is not Do.> with the energy(Gi) of the aura of the universe in direct, without studying the media and special learning through the act of momentary drawing of brush stroke.
But this picture is transferring the spiritual aura directly to individual through medium of brush beyond media, absorbing energy(Gi) of the univers of spiritual purity that humankind had been lost by occasion of putting emphasis on rationality and active spiritual experience of shamanism over passive spiritual experience of Gong(empty) of Buddhism or escaping from nature in the thought of Laotzu.
Sunwhado is the picture expressed not idea of “All in the world is God” of Pantheism of Stoicism in the period of Hellenism but the image of God who has the character simply. This image of God is not existence having difficulty to approach for ordinary person easily like Zeus’ sculpture of Greek mythology and Jupiter in Roman myth over human class transcending human domain. And The image of this God approaches to appreciator friendly as a simple line, having the style of portrait in the form of expression.
The western portrait has the purpose of reproducing the status of self image and introspecting oneself. But oriental portrait has not only the purpose of drawing of person but drawing of moving one’s spirit (The world art term dictionary 1999 WolganMisul) Particulary, not only Korean portrait has the purpose of representing contemporary celebrity but also the tendency of concentrating on description of expression of face to express mental world. In those days, detailed description seemed to be recognized as the understanding of the object of portrait.
Sunwhado is not concentrating on detailed description as portrait in the period of Chosun dynasty, although it is expressed the spirit of orientalism. Because modern society requires the simplicity, on account of oppressive feeling and anxiety coming from modern civilization. Also Sunwhado has not only aura coming form drawing act but also the purpose for transferring clearly the shape of simple and intimate God .
Sunwhado is drawn differently for each person. On occasion of this reason, it is not duplicated work. Duplication and similarity is different. Duplication is only a new imitation be lost original pure Seon(good). Repetitive duplication occurs to the loss of particular aura that original has, owing to becoming far away from original.
Sunhwado is painted not by duplication but by way of similarity. Similarity is not urged as the likeness of differentiated originality from duplication. It has a type of topology, not urging original similarity differentiated from duplicating of original image by minute distortion. In this similarity, subordinated type reflects individual the condition of inner psychology, having differentiation under the identity of Seon(good). Willing of trying to resolve through a healing and capturing the minute emotion coming form anxiety of civilization, denying a pursue for spiritual ability in modern society, is the crue of expression of artist’s work.
